Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will host one of its “Celebrating Who We Are – International Connections” events on Tuesday, April 16. This event will include a presentation and performance highlighting “Immigrants and Community in the Coal Fields of Eastern Kentucky, 1910 – 1930.” Professor Doug Cantrell will present at 3 p.m. in room 112 of the James S. Owen Building about various immigrant groups who came to mine coal in Eastern Kentucky, and the unique communal institutions they brought with them or developed to respond to the situation they found in Eastern Kentucky.

Following Cantrell’s presentation will be a performance of Bluegrass Music by Bobby Smith, Wayne Mabe and W.R. Huff. They will perform traditional Bluegrass music with an emphasis on its Appalachian roots. These musicians will be glad to entertain questions on their music and their individual instruments and how each of them became staples in Old Timey, Country, and Bluegrass Music.

Both of these events are free and open to the public.

Doug Cantrell is an expert on immigrants in eastern Kentucky and Appalachia, and has written and published extensively on the topic, including articles in several academic journals and numerous entries on various immigrants for two encyclopedias—the Encyclopedia of Appalachia published by the University of Tennessee Press and the Kentucky Encyclopedia, published by the University Press of Kentucky. In addition, he was a featured speaker on this topic for the Kentucky Humanities Council Speakers Bureau, and had his work included in an exhibit at the Kentucky History Museum in Frankfort entitled “Our New Kentucky Home.” In addition, a playwright at the Kentucky Historical Society wrote a play based on articles he had written on immigrants in eastern Kentucky, and on an oral history project with new immigrants that is today housed in the University of Kentucky special collections library.

Toy Box Theatre Presents Children's Play

Toy Box Theatre castElizabethtown Community and Technical College’s Toy Box Theatre will present a children’s play, Telling Tales Again, Sam?, on Thursday, April 25th at 7 p.m. in the Science Auditorium on ECTC’s campus. Admission is $2.00.

Directed by Katrina Eicher, professor of communication and theatre, the play is a comedy in which the storyteller, Sam, tries to tell familiar children’s stories but runs into trouble with a cast of stubborn characters who want to tell the tales their way. Children from the audience will interact with the actors, and adults will have plenty to entertain them. The production lasts about one hour.

The Toy Box Theatre was started at Elizabethtown Community College in 1998 by Ms. Eicher. The cast is comprised of college students, many first-time actors, who enroll in the class to gain performance experience and reach out to our community. Many area elementary schools travel to the campus to enjoy a performance during a field trip during the daytime performances; in the twelve shows presented thus far, the Toy Box Theatre’s actors have played to over 7,900 people. Eicher says the goal of Toy Box Theatre is “to encourage imagination in our young audiences. We use common household products and toys for our props to show the kids that, by using your imagination, you can make theatre magic anywhere, with anything.”

Any questions can be directed to Professor Eicher by calling 270-706-8536 or by emailing her at katrina.eicher@kctcs.edu.

Buddhist Monk to Discuss "Loving Your Enemies" on April 23 at ECTC

Buddhist monkOn Tuesday, April 23, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is honored to host a talk by Buddhist monk, Tsering Phuntsok, who is visiting the United States from Bir, India. The monk has also been invited to speak to several ECTC classes during his two-day visit to the community. His talk, entitled “Loving Your Enemies,” will be held April 23 at 7 p.m. in Room 212, the auditorium in the Regional Postsecondary Center. This event is free and open to the public.

This talk is described as a comparison and contrast of teachings and practices of learning to love enemies focusing on Christian and Buddhist teaching. Two questions will be addressed—why should we love enemies and how can we do this when it seems to go against fundamental human psychology.

Since entering the Palyul choekhorling Nyingmapa monastery in Bir, India, in 1987 at age 16, Tsering Phuntsok has been a practicing Buddhist monk. For the first 17 years he studied and practiced in the Nyingmapa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, receiving training in meditation, Buddhist scripture and philosophy, tantric ritual, lama dancing and music. For several years he trained young monks in ritual and academic subjects. He has received many tantric empowerments and sutra teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many other High Lamas, including H.H. Penor Rinpoche. In the last several years he has worked on health related projects for his monastery as well as overseeing his nieces and nephews.

He currently makes his residence in Dharamsala, India in the foothills of the Himalayas; his home is less than a minute walk from the Temple and residence of the H. H. Dalai Lama. Currently he facilitates cultural exchange programs between the Tibetan community and US university students who come to Dharamsala to volunteer with LHA, a local social work agency devoted to improving the lives of Tibetan refugees and local Indians. These groups also learn about Buddhism through visits to Tibetan monasteries. A soft-spoken man, with a quiet and engaging energy and humor, his goal is to practice and explain Buddhist dharma in a way that will help to alleviate suffering and speak to each hearer in a way suited to his or her own level of development.
