Holocaust Remembrance Day

ECTC will host a presentation by Beth Cahaney for Holocaust Remembrance Day on Monday, April 29 at 6 pm in the Science Auditorium on the campus of Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. The topic of the presentation is: The Libel Trial of Deborah Lipstadt. Deborah Lipstadt wrote “Denying the Holocaust.” Her book discusses various Holocaust deniers, those who deny that the Holocaust happened. David Irving was one denier, and he sued Lipstadt and her publisher Penguin for libel. The trial took place in England, where the burden of proof is on the defendant. While Lipstadt won the case, it was almost as if the Holocaust itself was on trial. The discussion will include information on anti-Semitism, libel, and the trial itself to include testimony of Jan Van Pelt, who spoke at the Marvin and Doris Rosen Symposium in 2002.
Beth Cahaney, retired Humanities professor ECTC, has a Master's Degree in Liberal Studies, Bellarmine University, a Master’s Degree in English SUNY, and was a participant in the first Marvin and Doris Rosen Symposium on the Holocaust, Appalachian State University, NC.

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is continuing to build its promising soccer programs for the 2013-2014 academic year. The ECTC Barons were competitive in men’s soccer last year, winning against such strong teams as Bellarmine, Campbellsville JV, Lindsey Wilson JV, and Southern State Community College (OH). Led by head coach Alex Molina, they are hoping to build on a very successful first year, with games starting in mid-August. The women’s soccer team, with returning head coach Andre Cooper, will start games in early September.

Any graduating seniors, current ECTC students or other prospective students who want to play soccer are encouraged to attend tryouts in early June. Men’s tryouts are June 4 and June 6 at Carroll Soccer Complex in Peterson Drive in Elizabethtown from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Tryouts for women’s soccer is June 17 at Carroll Soccer Complex from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The college will continue to compete as a “club team,” which gives the athletes the opportunity to play against strong competition.

“As a community and technical college, ECTC is providing student athletes an opportunity to continue to play the sport they love, and one to which they have devoted a tremendous amount of time and effort,” said Dr. Dale Buckles, Chief Student Affairs Officer. “We are building and sponsoring serious and competitive teams using primarily local student athletes.”

ECTC sports provide an opportunity for student athletes to enhance and enlist their athletic and intellectual skills through teamwork, sportsmanship, and competition and to provide educational and life-enriching experiences to student athletes.
More information will be available at a later date regarding tryouts for basketball or other sports. Anyone interested in ECTC sports who cannot attend tryouts should contact Dr. Dale Buckles at dale.buckles@kctcs.edu or 270-706-8431.

Fifty faculty and staff from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), including three from Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, were recognized for their leadership and significant achievements at the 2013 New Horizons awards ceremony held Monday, May 20, at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington.

The three ECTC faculty and staff recognized are: Michael Barlow, financial aid director, administrative staff award recipient; John Chism, assistant professor, automotive technology program, faculty award recipient; and Dawn Hayes, senior administrative assistant, Springfield Campus, support staff award recipient.

“These three members of the ECTC family are representative of the wonderful group of dedicated faculty and staff that works tirelessly to support our students,” said Dr. Thelma White, ECTC President/CEO. “I appreciate their hard work and the dedication of our faculty and staff.”

Michael BarlowMichael Barlow, Elizabethtown, is the Director of the Financial Aid Department. He has years of experience, knowledge, skills and character essential to help students navigate complex financial aid issues and to guide the financial aid staff. He must stay abreast of myriad changes in government regulations regarding financial aid disbursement, and is committed to enhancing financial literacy among students. Barlow is an advocate of accessible and affordable college education for everyone.

John ChismJohn Chism, Louisville, grew up in Meade County. John is an assistant professor in the automotive technology program. His years of experience as an automotive technician gave him a practical perspective in planning curriculum and teaching. John developed ECTC’s hybrid vehicle course, which was the first one offered in the state. He is committed to his students and the program, and often visits schools and other venues where he talks to prospective students about the expectations and opportunities in an automotive technology career.

Dawn HayesDawn Hayes, Bradfordsville, is the senior administrative assistant at ECTC’s Springfield Campus. Dawn serves as the campus receptionist, but her role has expanded far beyond that responsibility. For example, she coordinates the testing center, schedules classes and facilities, and created a localized Springfield Campus orientation for students to address their specific needs. She is committed to excellent and innovative service to ensure that students have the tools and resources they need to be successful.

Register for Fall Classes NOW!

Summer classes at ECTC  are well underway. Now is the perfect time for prospective students to submit applications and enroll in classes for Fall Semester. The earlier students register for classes, the better their chances of getting the classes they need, on the days and times they want.
ECTC teaches classes at its Elizabethtown Campus, Springfield Campus, Fort Knox and, now, at a new Leitchfield Campus, in addition to a large selection of online classes and programs.
Prospective students are advised to begin the application and registration process immediately. Students who have already applied can sign up online for an orientation session where they can register for classes. Or they can call the college and schedule a meeting with a counselor to register for classes. There is no need to wait until the general registration dates in August, when the entire process can be completed this summer.
Students who intend to enroll in Fall classes this summer will benefit from participation in the college’s new BUILD Orientation, which prepares students to succeed in college classes. The orientations also give students who are registration-ready the opportunity to enroll in classes and complete their schedules for Fall Semester. To be registration-ready, students must submit an application, transcripts, and test scores. A COMPASS test may also be required for course placement.
To be best prepared for Fall Semester and to help avoid being dropped from classes, students should apply for financial aid as soon as possible. Anyone planning to enroll in the Fall will complete the 2013-2014 FAFSA, at www.fafsa.gov. The ECTC school code is 001991. Financial aid is still available for fall semester, but the application must be completed soon for funds to be available before registration.
Also, students should be aware of a change in payment policies. All tuition must be paid, or payment plans in place, by August 16. Students with unpaid balances will be dropped from their classes. For questions about tuition payment, contact the Business Office at 270-706-8806.

Anyone interested in starting their college career can get started now at ECTC, with about 30 programs that will lead to rewarding careers. Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Degrees provide the general education courses that meet requirements for the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at an affordable cost. ECTC offers opportunities in the following programs:

Associate in Arts/Associate in Science Transfer Degrees – these degrees will transfer to other colleges and universities and comprise the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. Students can earn bachelor’s degrees in STEM – science, technology, engineering, math – fields, and other professions such as business, medicine, liberal arts, education, music, and much more.

Biology Honors Course Challenges Students

Biology Honors studentsThree Elizabethtown Community and Technical College students were the first to enroll in a new Biology Honors Program. John Singletary, Vine Grove, Ashley Register, Elizabethtown, and Cheyenne Morgan, Radcliff, under the guidance of their teacher, Joe Wolf, used vegetable greens to test for bacteria, which is resistant to the antibiotics ampicillin and penicillin. The projects and presentations were judged by biology and medical experts. They presented the results of their independent study and experiments at the end of Spring Semester. Their posters detailed their projects' objectives, processes, results and conclusions.

“This type of student research is typically done in four-year colleges and universities,” said Joe Wolf, assistant professor in biology. “Although not common in community colleges, the trend toward independent study seems to be changing slightly as we focus on increasing student engagement. ECTC invested in these students, and I’ve seen both the students and the college benefit from that investment.”

John Singletary was thrilled to have the opportunity to be in the program. “Science is defined as the study of nature through experimentation and observation. This course allows us to experience something amazing at a community college level, by allowing us to begin experiments without knowing what the results will be. We had the opportunity to experience true research, and how the scientific community communicates their ideas and amazing discoveries. No book could ever take the place of the knowledge and experience I’ve gained in this last semester under Dr. Wolf's guidance. I don’t know of another community college that allows sophomore students the privilege of this experience. When I move on to a four year college I will have an exceptional understanding of the scientific process. In my opinion this program has raised the expectations of education in community colleges, and these traits should be cultivated in all educators.”

The Biology Honors Program is offered in the Spring Semester. Students who are strong performers in either Principles of Microbiology or Principles of Biology are encouraged to enroll in the course, which has a research theme of Environmental Microbiology. “Cheyenne, Ashley, and John did great work, the kind that college juniors or seniors do in their major. I’m very proud of what they accomplished. I hope to be able to take elements of each student’s work and create a poster that represents ECTC at the Conference for Student Research this November.”

There is plenty of opportunity for students in future Biology Honors Programs to build on what these students have discovered. Or their projects could take a new direction.
The Biology Honors Program was funded by a mini-grant initiative designed to stimulate creative thinking among faculty and staff, enhance the college’s learning environment and support student success. The program is funded by private gifts and a special allocation from the ECTC President’s Office.

Story MusgraveElizabethtown Community and Technical College is excited to host one of the most well-known and versatile astronauts in the U.S. in a public presentation. Story Musgrave, who by any definition has led a fascinating life, will talk about his experiences and career on Tuesday, September 10, at 7 p.m. in ECTC’s Regional Postsecondary Center, Room 212. The Social and Behavioral Sciences Division is sponsoring a service learning project lead by Jo Yates (Human Services) to assist students and persons in the local community to learn more about possible eligibility for free insurance or federal subsidies to offset the cost of health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Regardless of various opinions on this program the fact remains that many of our ECTC students will be eligible for free and/or subsidized health care insurance. It is our intent to assist students and community members to obtain adequate health care through the ACA when open enrollment begins October 1, 2013 and runs through March 31, 2014.

Toward the purpose of serving our students and community in obtaining adequate health care, the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division will be sponsoring guest speakers and information booths manned by Human Services’ students throughout the semester. Our first guest speaker will be Jeannie Samdami who will speak on the ACA on September 24th at 7 PM in room 212 RPC. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Please invite anyone in the community or inform any students who you think might benefit from information on the ACA provided by this guest speaker. Also, Jo Yates and Ms. Samdami will be guest speakers on a local television station hosted by Mr. Dale Ming who is with Hardin County Schools Department of Cultural Diversity.
