When most people think about a community college, they usually don’t imagine the possibility of international travel and study. But three Elizabethtown Community and Technical College students and one of their teachers will be doing just that through the Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) this summer. The three students will each spend about a month in their respective countries – Argentina, Costa Rica and Greece. Jim Murley, ECTC art history professor, will also travel to Greece and teach art and archeology classes while there.
Christian “Chrissy” Peters, Elizabethtown, is a sophomore who plans to transfer to Western Kentucky University in the fall and study advertising and marketing. Christian will spend a month in Buenos Aires, Argentina and study photojournalism while she’s there.
Laurie Jaggers, White Mills, an ECTC sophomore, will travel to Greece and take anthropology and Murley’s art/archeology class. She plans to transfer to Western Kentucky University to study sociology so she can work for the Red Cross on an international disaster team.
Andrea Ewen, Radcliff, a freshman at ECTC, will spend a month in Costa Rica, where she will study Anthropology and Spanish, with a goal of becoming fluent in Spanish before she enters ECTC’s nursing program.
Peters and Jaggers were both awarded $2,000 scholarships for the travel from the North Central Education Foundation’s Peden Fund. Ewen was awarded a $500 scholarship from ECTC.
“This KIIS experience is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience international travel and cultures before they get too far along in their college careers,” said Murley. “They must register for at least one 3-credit course for academic credit, which is awarded by Western Kentucky University and automatically transferred to ECTC.
“International travel is typically considered a junior or senior year activity, so this gives our students a real advantage to be able to participate as freshmen or sophomores. And they also earn credit for junior and senior level college courses. We will be offering this opportunity every year, and we hope to encourage more students to apply and take advantage of it.”
