ECTC Celebrates Excellence in Scholarship and Academic Achievement

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College held its annual program to recognize outstanding academic achievement on Friday, April 29 at the Pritchard Community Center in Elizabethtown. The ceremony, called “A Celebration of Excellence: Recognizing Scholarship and Academic Achievement,” honored several categories of achievement, including Honors Students, Program Awards and Scholarships.

Dr. Tiffany Evans, ECTC Provost/Chief Academic Officer, remarked: “Today we celebrate the achievements of our student scholars. The ECTC students being honored today represent some of the highest achieving, talented, and engaged students from across the Commonwealth. We are tremendously proud of our students and their achievements.”

ECTC students can complete associate degrees and transfer to four-year institutions to pursue bachelor’s degrees, earn credentials that will lead to rewarding careers, or seek customized training to advance their careers.

Honors Students
Each year at the College recognizes exceptional students who have achieved academic honors and scholastic distinction by attaining and maintaining high accumulative grade point averages. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a full year’s worth of coursework at ECTC to be eligible.
These are the specific criteria used for determining Honors Students:
1. Have completed 30 or more credit hours at ECTC.
2. Have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.
AND
3. Enrolled as a full-time student during both Fall and Spring semesters of the current academic year.
OR
4. A part-time student who has completed at least 60 hours of coursework at ECTC, who intends to graduate this year.
In addition to meeting the criteria above, the 4.0 Medallion is for Graduates of Excellence. Graduating students who have maintained a GPA of 4.0 will receive a medallion for this achievement. These students are recognized as both medallion recipients as well as honor students. (The names of Dean’s List and President’s List students were released in a prior news release.)

The Heartland Review
announces
2016 Summer Creative Writing Academy

Registration Deadline: June 1, 2016

Calling All High School Creative Writers & Poets:

Please join us for a six day summer creative writing academy held at Elizabethtown Community & Technical College. The academy will be held June 20 – 23, and June 27-28.

June 20-23: We will explore the techniques, structure, styles, and themes from engaging and exciting authors, such as Pablo Neruda, Jamaica Kincaid, Joyce Carole Oates, and William Carlos Williams. Participants will be led through a number of creative writing prompts and exercises, resulting in their own original creative works, which will be published in an anthology.

June 27 & 28: Participants will collaboratively workshop one another’s works and identify the strongest pieces to be published in the anthology. The summer academy will culminate with a celebratory public reading of the participants’ chosen works. Each participant will receive a professionally published copy of the anthology.

To honor the creative and peer-review processes, academy class size will be a maximum of 15 (fifteen) high school-aged students. Snacks will be provided during the two-hour long sessions.

The Heartland Review asks for a donation of $60 for the academy. Donations will be applied toward food, supplies, and publishing costs associated with the anthology. Participants will have the opportunity to become members of the Heartland Review’s Creative Writing Club and encouraged to practice their craft and workshop with other local writers and attend readings at ECTC.

All activities will be led and coordinated by Mick Kennedy who holds an MFA from Murray State University, teaches creative writing for ECTC, has several publications, and is the editor of The Heartland Review. The academy will take place in ECTC’s library from 1-3 p.m. The place and date for the reading will be determined later.

To register, send check or money order and registration form to:

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is offering students a one-stop enrollment opportunity during the week of July 18. Express Enrollment week is a statewide event for all community and technical colleges to help with one-on-one advising regarding enrollment, financial aid, scheduling and other items that prospective students need to complete for the fall semester. Additionally, if a student has not taken a placement test, that can be scheduled as well.
The goal is to make the enrollment process as simple and fast as possible. Most students should be able to complete the process during their advising session.
“We know many of our prospective students are anxious about college, but we want to relieve that anxiety and make enrolling as easy as possible,” said Suzanne Darland, Director, Advising Center. “We believe if we can simplify this first important step, more students are likely to take advantage of the affordable opportunities ECTC has to offer.”
ECTC will host Express Enrollment at all campus locations, including Elizabethtown, Fort Knox, Leitchfield, and Springfield Campuses, from July 18 – 22 from 8 a.m. until 4:30 each day.
Students who enrolled last semester, but have not registered for fall will receive a reminder email and/or call inviting them to Express Enrollment at their local college. Those who have not attended, may schedule an appointment by visiting express.gokctcs.com.

Fall Semester classes will start soon at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, but there is still time for new and returning students to enroll. Parents and guardians of college-age students are invited to a Parent Orientation Session, where they can learn about the enrollment process, financial aid, academic and technical programs, student organizations, career and transfer options and more. There will also be an opportunity for campus tours.
The Parent Orientation Session is Tuesday, July 19 at 6 p.m. in Room 212 of the Regional Postsecondary Center on ECTC’s main campus. Recent high school graduates considering their college options are also welcome to attend.
ECTC offers two-year transfer degrees, as well as a broad selection of technical programs that lead to rewarding career opportunities. Classes and programs are available through flexible options to serve a variety of student needs. Sessions begin August 15, September 12 and October 10, both in the classroom and online. A Weekend College Program is designed to serve working adults, with online classes supplemented by classroom meetings on two Saturdays a month.
General registration is open to all new and returning students, August 2 – 4 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily. A Parent Orientation Session for students who have enrolled will be held on Thursday, August 4 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 212 of the Regional Postsecondary Center.
