ECTC Hosts EarthFest 2015

Felicia Toliver, director of cultural diversity at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, dressed Thursday in a costume of hundreds of plastic shopping bags. She walked through the Regional Postsecondary Center on campus with a sign that said “One shopper, one year, 500 bags” at the college’s EarthFest event to acknowledge Earth Day.
“When you go to the grocery store and you make your purchase and when you go to department stores and make your purchase, you don’t think about what 500 bags over a year actually looks like,” she said. “It’s easy to kind of minimize the impact on the environment when you’re just doing maybe five bags or two bags at a time. This project is to encourage people to use reusable bags instead of always just getting the plastic bags.”
Toliver requested plastic bag donations from ECTC faculty and staff throughout the past week to create her “bag monster” costume.
“A lot of times, people will keep them under their sink and they’ll reuse them for a couple of different things at home or they’ll take them to the recycle bin, which is still better than just throwing them away,” she said.
Many different booths and vendors were lined up inside to avoid the rain during EarthFest to educate guests on earth sustainability.
ECTC student Jon Elmore recently learned one of the worst places in the world for air pollution is Fresno, California.
He was assigned in a group to research an Earth Day concern for his physics class. His group chose pollution for its topic and created a display for EarthFest.
“Fresno has significantly more air pollution than any other place in the U.S.,” he said.
He said the pollution mostly comes from factories, automobiles and a large landfill.
“It’s really hard for one person to make a difference,” he said. “There’s cleaner solutions than the easier route. It’s easy to take the cheap way out and maximize profits by doing whatever’s unhealthy for the environment, but if you put the extra money into it and you do other things instead of just like burning coal constantly for energy ... that would really decrease the amount of smog and (particle pollution) that’s put into the air.”
Angie Benson, a member of ECTC’s Bio¬logy Club, handed out packets of milkweed seeds during EarthFest. Monarch caterpillars and many butterflies rely on milkweed for food.
“There’s a lot of habitat destruction because people think of it as a weed,” she said. “We are giving away seed packets and information on how to grow them. We’re trying to rebuild their habitat.”
Faculty members also planted a dogwood tree on the campus. The tree, sponsored by ECTC’s Student Government Association, is one of 10 Kentucky native trees they will plant this spring.
A second portion of EarthFest events, hosted by Hardin County Earthcare Collaborative, is Saturday at First Presbyterian Church at 1016 Pear Orchard Road in Elizabethtown. The event begins with a 5K run at 9 a.m.. then live music and activities at 11 a.m..

ECTC to Host 9th Annual Early Childhood Education Conference

By Jaime Thomas

For the ninth year in a row, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will host the Early Childhood Conference, one of the largest of its kind in the state.
“Our goal is to provide quality training for people working in childcare and preschool teachers,” said Martha Page, program coordinator and assistant professor of Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education at ECTC.
The conference will be held Saturday, April 18, with the theme of “Ready Set Go! School Readiness Birth to Preschool.” It’s a full-day event that includes keynote speakers and workshop presentations, all with the objective of helping prepare children to be successful in school. “It begins in the cradle,” Page said.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Nicki Patton Rowe, early childhood consultant and trainer. Rowe will discuss what learning looks like inside the brain and how the brain processes text, among other things. Also speaking will be former Governor Paul Patton, who will describe when he first learned how the brain develops and how that changed his perspective of what teaching and learning should look like during the first five years of a child’s life.
The workshop presentations consist of training on such subjects as infant massage, signing with infants and toddlers, language development and autism spectrum disorders, as well as other areas of child development. “We have to provide high quality training for employees at childcare and preschool centers if we expect them to provide a high quality experience for students,” Page said. “Not only are conference participants receiving pertinent information, they also have an opportunity to collaborate with other professionals in their field with similar concerns. They can trouble shoot problems in a face-to-face, interpersonal format.”
The conference has space for 275 participants and those interested can sign up until the day before the conference or until all spaces are filled. “It’s open to the general public, but our audience objective is students majoring in early childhood education, those working in childcare and preschool teachers,” Page said.
She also said that by attending, childcare providers can earn five of the required 15 training hours they must have each year.
The cost to attend the conference is $25 and includes lunch. The conference will have educational vendors and agencies within the community and region on hand to provide information and items for purchase. “Participants have an opportunity to network with the respective organizations and see how those constituents can assist in the field of early childhood education,” Page said.
With the conference, ECTC strives to include very competent presenters to ensure that young children and their families are receiving the professional best, regardless of where they attend school or their unique stage of development.
“It is so important that child care providers no longer assume that young children fit a mold or develop at the same rate,” Page said. “Each child must be given opportunities to reach his/her highest potential.”

The Elizabethtown Community and Technical College Honors Program to recognize outstanding academic achievement was held on Friday, April 24 at the State Theater in Elizabethtown. Dr. Jay Box, new president of the Kentucky Community and Technical College system, welcomed and congratulated the high-achieving students. He said, “For 50 years ECTC has been a college of opportunity for thousands of students, and those alumni have distinguished themselves in nearly every profession. I’m sure you, too, will be successful if you continue to work hard and dedicate yourself to reaching your goals.” ECTC students can complete associate degrees and transfer to four-year institutions to pursue bachelor’s degrees, earn credentials that will lead to rewarding careers, or seek customized training to advance their careers.

Several categories of achievement were honored, including Honors Students, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, Program Awards, and Scholarships.

Honors Students
Each year at the College recognizes exceptional students who have achieved academic honors and scholastic distinction by attaining and maintaining high accumulative grade point averages. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a full year’s worth of coursework at ECTC to be eligible.
These are the specific criteria used for determining Honors Students:
1. Have completed 30 or more credit hours at ECTC.
2. Have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.
AND
3. Enrolled as a full-time student during both Fall and Spring semesters of the current academic year.
OR
4. A part-time student who has completed at least 60 hours of coursework at ECTC, who intends to graduate this year.
In addition to meeting the criteria above, the 4.0 Medallion is for graduating students. Graduating students who have maintained a GPA of 4.0 will receive a medallion for this achievement. These students are recognized as both medallion recipients as well as honor students.

ECTC Student Earns Prestigious NIH Internship

$

Joshua OhdeElizabethtown Community and Technical College student Joshua Ohde will spend the summer working at the National Institutes of Health alongside some of the nation’s top scientists and researchers. The former Hodgenville resident, who now lives in Frankfort, completed two years at ECTC and will transfer to the University of Kentucky in the fall. But this summer he’s looking forward to a unique internship experience that is the envy of researchers everywhere.
Joshua discovered his interest in research when he enrolled in Dr. Joe Wolf’s Honors Biology class, a research-based course. “That course got me headed down the path of research,” said Joshua. “I learned so much from Dr. Wolf in Honors Biology, and realized I love doing research. Our project centered on microbes isolated from Bess beetles. When I heard about the NIH internship, I decided to apply for it.”
The NIH internship application required two letters of recommendation, two essays, a list of courses taken and grades, security clearance and a background check. Joshua said it took a week to complete the application, but the effort paid off. He was one of 1100 students accepted out of 6500 applications into the program. The summer internship Joshua was accepted into is an enrichment program for community college students, with coursework and seminars. But the most exciting aspect for Joshua is the opportunity to work with a research mentor in the labs on the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
“I’ll be working in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestion and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) within the NIH,” explained Joshua. “We were asked to submit our top five choices for research areas, and this was one of my top five. We’ll study a particular biochemical pathway that is shown to link sugar consumption and protein function, specifically the role on embryonic development and its link to diseases such as obesity, type-2 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.” He will work with a postdoctoral fellow, who will also serve as a mentor, and then complete a project of his own.
This research experience will enhance Joshua’s knowledge as he continues his education at UK in agricultural biotechnology. After completing his bachelor’s degree, he aspires to a Ph.D from UK. “I wouldn’t be on this path now, or have this tremendous opportunity, if it hadn’t been for Dr. Wolf at ECTC and his Honors Biology and microbiology classes,” he said. “Those classes opened up the world of research to me, and opened the door to this remarkable internship experience.”
Joshua’s microbiology professor and mentor, Dr. Joe Wolf, added: “We are all very proud of Joshua at ECTC. His impressive accomplishments show what is possible for a student from central Kentucky who attends community college and applies himself. His story also demonstrates that learning science by doing science at ECTC works. The honors research course helped him secure this internship, and the internship will help open doors in his future.”

EIFTC DonationThe Elizabethtown/Hardin County Industrial Foundation Training Consortium (EIFTC) has partnered with Elizabethtown Community and Technical College to enhance the delivery of training to area industry and support the education of students majoring in high technology disciplines.
EIFTC has given $60,393 to ECTC to purchase a FANUC robotics training cart that will provide advanced robotics experiences. It offers integrated vision and force sensing products, simulation packages, application software and other training/educational aids.
ECTC also will acquire items necessary to complete an integrated manufacturing system that mimics actual applications in manufacturing robotics, programmable Logical controls and motor controls. The system will allow students to program simulated assembly processes.
“This state-of-the-art equipment complements existing technology in ECTC’s classrooms and laboratories and greatly expands our ability to both teach students advanced manufacturing processes and train the area’s workforce,” said Michael Hazzard, chair of ECTC’s Technical Division and a certified FANUC instructor. “This generous investment in technology will help ensure that instruction at ECTC continues to be up-to-date and relevant to the needs of business and industry.”
EIFTC coordinates the development and implementation of training programs for member companies, works to upgrade skills of current members and supports the educational development of students who may be considered for employment upon graduation.
“Elizabethtown Community and Technical College through its Workforce Solutions unit continues to meet the training needs of the area’s business and industry community and partners with various entities to ensure that we have a well-prepared, qualified workforce,” said Shane Wilson, Altec Industries facilities manager and chair of the EIFTC Board of Directors. “This gift to ECTC is an investment in the future of our community and the entire region served by the college.”
EIFTC members include AGC Automotive, Akebono Corporation, Altec Industries, Inc., Beam Suntory, Bluegrass Cellular, The Cecilian Bank, City of Elizabethtown, Dow Corning, ECTC, Elizabethtown-Hardin County Industrial Foundation, Inc., Flex Films, Metalsa Corporation and Mouser Cabinetry, LLC.

Offices that serve students, including admissions, financial aid, advising, the assessment center and the bookstore, will be open July 27 – 31 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. (M-F) and August 1 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. (Sat). The extended evening and Saturday hours are designed to accommodate those people who can’t visit the college office during regular office hours but would like to enroll in classes for the fall semester.
