New TRIO Grant at ECTC Will Open Doors to College Education for Adults
Elizabethtown Community and Technical College has received a $1.18 million TRIO Educational Opportunity Center grant. The five-year program will provide counseling and information on college admissions to qualified adults who want to enter, re-enter or continue a program of postsecondary education. The program provides assistance in preparing necessary admissions and financial aid applications.
One goal of the program is to improve the financial and economic literacy of participants through counseling on financial aid options and basic financial planning skills. The EOC program aims to increase the number of adult participants who enroll in postsecondary education institutions, with a goal to serve 1,000 people each year.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to help more adults achieve their life goals,” said Dr. Tiffany Evans, ECTC Provost. “With this grant we can help people find the best, most affordable and efficient to ways to earn their college degrees, and provide the support they need to be successful along the way.”
The EOC will reach out to people in the following counties: Breckinridge, Grayson, Green, Hardin, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Taylor and Washington. The majority of participants will include people who are potentially first-generation college graduates, meaning neither parent has received a bachelor’s degree, and low-income, based on Federal Income Guidelines. But anyone who is interested in the program is free to apply.
ECTC will fill four new positions to staff this grant for at least five years. They will provide the following services:
• Academic advice and assistance in course selection
• Assistance in completing college admission and financial aid applications
• Assistance in preparing for college entrance examinations
• Education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of participants
• Guidance on secondary school reentry or entry to a General Educational Development (GED) program or other alternative education program for secondary school dropouts
• Individualized personal, career, and academic counseling
• Career workshops
• Referral services to community and educational resources
