Through September and October Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will host a series of events designed to involve and educate students and the public about the Constitution and the political process. Leading up to the presidential election in November, these events are meant to educate people about the value and importance of voting, the continued significance of the Constitution in our daily lives, and the roles of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln. All of the events are free and open to the public.

From now until September 21the college’s Morrison Gallery is featuring “Abraham Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” a national traveling exhibit that looks at Lincoln’s struggles to meet the political and constitutional challenges of the Civil War.

Throughout the month of September, ECTC students, faculty and staff will provide opportunities for people on campus to register to vote. The ECTC library and the Western Kentucky University library on campus will have voter registration cards available during open library hours.

On September 13 at 2 p.m. ECTC history professor Doug Cantrell will give a talk about the “Writing of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.” The talk will be held in room 112 in the Owen (Administration) Building.

Justice Minton will talk about “The Fourth Amendment & GPS Tracking,” the subject of a recent Supreme Court ruling. The chief justice has served as the fifth chief justice of Kentucky since 2008, after service for two years as a justice on the Supreme Court.

On Wednesday, September 19, the college will host a performance by Chris Vallillo, entitled “Lincoln in Song.” Vallillo, a popular folk musician and storyteller, will perform at 6 p.m. in the Science Auditorium.
