Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will host a talk by Dr. Riffat Hassan on March 26 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. in the James S. Owen Building, Room 112. Her talk is titled: “MUSLIM WOMEN: NORMATIVE TEACHINGS VERSUS CULTURAL PRACTICES.”

This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by The Kentucky Humanities Council, the ECTC Office of Cultural Diversity, and the ECTC Multicultural Committee.

Dr. Riffat Hassan, an internationally acclaimed religious scholar and Professor Emerita from the University of Louisville, has taught generations of students about Islam, and articulated a progressive understanding of the religion that has influenced Muslims around the world. She is also a human rights activist who has done much to promote women’s rights in Muslim societies. In this lecture, Dr. Hassan will compare the teachings of Islam as they relate to women’s rights with current cultural practices in the Islamic world. The Qur’an, Hassan argues, teaches that men and women are equal, but misinterpretation of the text has led to current cultural practices that often contradict that message.
